WHAT IS YOGA THERAPY
WHAT IS YOGA THERAPY?
Yoga Therapy is a 4,000-year old practice that is emerging as the next wave of holistic healthcare. You might call it the intersection of medically mandated treatment, psychology, and the mind body spirit modalities of yoga.
HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM REGULAR YOGA?
Yoga Therapy has a specific clinical intent based on the physical and emotional challenges each client faces. It starts with individual assessments so that the teacher can create a customized practice. Yoga Therapy can be offered as one-on-one training, or in small 6-8-person classes to ensure as much personal attention as possible. The assessment & evaluation process continues on an ongoing basis, enabling the teacher to adapt or evolve training to changing needs.
WHAT ARE THE KEY BENEFITS?
Yoga Therapy is ideal for people facing more serious physical or emotional traumas – Aging issues, PTSD, Cancer Survivor issues, addictive disorders, significant physical challenges and the like. Many integrative and holistically-minded M.D.s are already including Yoga Therapy as part of their treatment plans, and billing Insurance accordingly.
HOW DOES YOGA THERAPY WORK?
Yoga Therapy is not simply a treatment – it’s a way for patients to tap into their own innate healing abilities. For example, a Yoga Therapist might teach a particular kind of breathwork to address a chronic asthma issue. If the patient practices that breathing exercise regularly, she may find that her long-term anxieties have eased as well.
WHAT ARE THE CREDENTIALS OF A CERTIFIED YOGA THERAPIST?
A trained yoga therapist holds a certification from an accredited graduate school offering an IAYT (International Association of Yoga Therapists) curriculum. Certification typically requires at least 1000 hours of classwork and applied learning, focusing on areas such as pain management, neurological & mental health issues, major illnesses and healthy aging.
